Edited by Harry Parkin, Lucy Andrew, Matt Davies and Sally West
Passages of Time presents a range of shortlisted entries submitted to the 2023 Cheshire Prize for Literature. Reading through this collection of short stories, children’s literature, poems and scripts, an overarching theme of time comes to the fore. Whether it is ageing, coming of age, new beginnings, future development or historical comparisons, the topics of the writing included within this anthology show a collective focus on who we have been, who we may become, and what makes us who we are. These subjects are dealt with directly and through allegory and analogy, always reflecting a desire to make sense of how our experiences within families, within relationships, and across generations contribute to our understanding of ourselves, our families, our friends, our communities, and all humanity.
The Cheshire Prize for Literature was inaugurated in 2003 as the High Sheriff’s Cheshire Prize for Literature. It is administered by the University of Chester. The 2023 competition was for poetry, short fiction, children’s literature and scriptwriting and this anthology contains the entries shortlisted for the prize, including the winners and the runners-up.
