Excess Baggage
by Ronlin Foreman

A series of solo performances by Ronlin Foreman encompassing the Clown, the Fool and the Grotesque, Excess Baggage showcases some of the definitive moments from a career spanning forty years. Extracts from seminal works are woven together and interspersed with commentary from his current perspective as a master teacher since 2003, to provide a unique insight into the evolution of one of the great clown artists of our time.

The story begins in the late 1970s, when Foreman created a signature clown for the Vaudeville-style family show Bananas. Four years later this evolved into his first full-length clown show, A Happy Fellow, which premiered in the New York Clown Theare Festival in 1983. The whistle-stop tour continues with extracts from work created in the 1980s commissioned by Dance Works of Toronto, entitled Tere a Tere (Earth to Earth), which explores movement abstracted from the gestures of anguish, and the ironies of “desperation as comedy.” From here Foreman began to rove from the Clown into the world of the Fool and the Grotesque and all three were folded into his best-known evening-length performance, titled Pigeon Show: a play of fools.

Join Foreman for an evening of informed and poignant reminiscence, exploring the evolving nature of his own relationship with the world of Clown, as well as demonstrating his own unique approach to this elusive art form.
